The Marshall Islands began issuing collectible coinage under a 1988 act establishing the Republic's own currency authority, though U.S. dollars remain the functional money in daily use. These pieces were never intended to circulate. The Classic Cars series targeted the American collector market directly, timed to coincide with the late-1990s boom in automotive memorabilia.

The "Classic Six" designation refers to Chevrolet's early six-cylinder engine program, which GM developed to compete with Ford's Model T dominance in the budget market during the 1910s.
