The unicorn's place on the Scottish royal coat of arms — and by extension the British royal arms — traces to medieval heraldic tradition in which the beast was considered so dangerous it had to be shown chained. When Scotland and England unified under James VI and I in 1603, the unicorn displaced the English dragon as the left supporter, a political negotiation rendered in heraldry. Charles III acceded in September 2022, making 2025 issues among the earliest struck under his full reign across Commonwealth territories.
