Reverse description The reverse presents a dramatic high-relief depiction of Spartacus, the Thracian gladiator and leader of the Third Servile War, shown as a powerful warrior in full combat stance within a Roman amphitheatre. He wears a crested Thracian helmet, a pteryges skirt, and a skull-emblazoned belt, and is rendered with selective gold gilding highlighting the helmet, belt, sword hilt, and spear shaft. In his left hand he wields a broad gladius and in his right an extended hasta, with fallen opponents and scattered helmets and shields visible beneath him in the foreground. The packed tiered seating of the arena and dramatic clouded sky fill the background in finely detailed relief. The incuse legend SPARTACUS arcs across the upper field.
