| Obverse description | Central field features an elaborately rendered heraldic shield surmounted by a royal crown, enclosed within an ornate cartouche of deeply sculpted acanthus-leaf scrollwork in high relief. The shield bears the Public Seal of Niue at its centre, depicted as a circular medallion with indigenous motifs surrounded by a decorative border, above crossed implements and a ribbon scroll inscribed ATUA / NIUE TUKULAGI. The date 2026 appears on a banner immediately below the crown, and the designer's monogram TS is positioned at the base of the shield. The Fire Horse year in the Chinese sexagenary cycle last fell in 1966, when birth rates in Japan dropped sharply — superstition held that women born under that sign would be headstrong and difficult to marry. The cycle returns in 2026. Niue has issued Chinese lunar coinage under licensing arrangements for decades, functioning essentially as a mint-state vehicle for the New Zealand-administered territory's nominal sovereign status.
