| Additional information |
Issued to mark the death of Elizabeth II in September 2022, this coin was produced under New Zealand's first new sovereign in over seventy years. Charles III had not yet been crowned when the queen died — his coronation followed in May 2023 — making the "1st Portrait" designation historically precise: this effigy was approved and entered circulation before the coronation portrait was finalized.
New Zealand retained the monarchy through a convention rather than any legislative act, with Charles III automatically proclaimed sovereign the moment Elizabeth died.
