Obverse description Left-facing draped and capped bust of Liberty in high relief, her Phrygian cap inscribed with the legend LIBERTY across the band. Long flowing curls fall behind the neck, with a beaded border encircling the entire field. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged around the periphery, seven to the left and six to the right of the effigy, with the four-digit date centered in the lower exergue.

Reverse description Heraldic spread eagle displayed at center, its breast overlaid with a Union shield of thirteen vertical stripes and a horizontal bar chief. The eagle clutches three arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right, symbolizing war and peace respectively. Above the eagle's heads, a scroll bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, while a semicircular arc of thirteen stars and clouds occupies the upper field. The peripheral legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs around the upper and lateral border, with the denomination 5 D. inscribed in the lower field below the eagle's tail.
