Obverse description The national arms of the Republic of the Marshall Islands occupies the central field, depicting a traditional Marshallese stick chart navigation device in the lower portion, flanked by a frigate bird with outstretched wings at centre, a radiant sun at the top, palm trees to the left, a traditional outrigger sailing canoe to the right, and a fishing net in the upper right. The design is enclosed within a decorative chain border. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper rim, while JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN — the national motto — curves along the lower rim. The denomination $5 appears to the left and the date 1998 to the right, with the word SEAL inscribed on a banner at the base of the arms.
