Palau began issuing marine-themed silver dollars in 1992, shortly after gaining its Compact of Free Association with the United States, and the program became one of the more commercially successful bullion-adjacent collector series of the 1990s Pacific island mint boom. These pieces were produced almost entirely for the numismatic export market — Palau had no meaningful domestic coin circulation economy of its own.
KM#76 sits in the middle of a prolific run of similar issues from this period, many struck at foreign mints under contract.
