Liberia became a prolific issuer of commemorative copper-nickel crowns throughout the 1990s, most produced under contract by foreign mints for the collector market rather than domestic circulation. This piece marks the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, the eleven-month Allied operation — June 1948 to May 1949 — during which Western aircraft flew over 200,000 supply missions into West Berlin after Soviet forces blocked all ground access routes.
