Liberia's commemorative dollar series of the late 1990s was produced largely by the Pobjoy Mint and similar private contractors feeding a collector market with little connection to Liberian monetary circulation. The Berlin Airlift ended in May 1949 after 278,228 flights delivered over 2.3 million tons of supplies into West Berlin — a logistical operation that planners had initially doubted could sustain a city of two million people through winter.
