Obverse description The supported Royal Arms vignette occupies the centre of the note, engraved in fine intaglio with two lion supporters, a crowned shield bearing the quartered arms of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the motto ribbon below. Elaborate guilloche underprint in salmon-pink fills the field, with ornate foliate cornerpieces carrying the numeral 5 at each corner, and the word FIVE in vertical letterpress panels on both lateral margins. The bank title arches across the upper portion in bold letterpress, with the promise-to-pay legend, incorporation notices, branch overprint in red, date, and two manuscript signatures appearing in the lower half.
