Annie Oakley's sharpshooting career was built on a childhood of necessity — she began hunting game in rural Ohio to pay off her widowed mother's mortgage, reportedly settling the debt by age fifteen. Buffalo Bill's Wild West show made her internationally famous, but it was her 1887 European tour, during which she reportedly shot a cigarette from the lips of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, that cemented her legend abroad.
Liberia has issued commemorative silver in this weight class regularly since the 1990s, contracting largely through European distributors targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation.
