Additional information

El Jem's amphitheatre — ancient Thysdrus — was built around 238 AD in what is now central Tunisia, making it one of the largest Roman amphitheatres ever constructed and the best-preserved in Africa. Its sheer scale was almost certainly tied to the enormous wealth generated by the surrounding olive oil trade, which made the region one of Rome's most productive African provinces.

Palau has no geographic or historical connection to the site. The republic has issued hundreds of commemorative pieces under licensing arrangements, effectively functioning as a mint-for-hire for foreign themes.
