On 29 May 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest — news that reached London in time to break on the morning of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. Palau, a Pacific microstate with no mountaineering tradition and a population under 20,000, has built a substantial share of its numismatic revenue on commemorative themes entirely disconnected from its own history. This coin marks the sixtieth anniversary of that ascent.
