Congress authorized this coin under the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act of 2018, which mandated that surcharges from sales fund the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. The curved concave obverse — shared across the entire Apollo 11 commemorative series in four denominations — was a genuine engineering challenge for the Mint, requiring new die and planchet production techniques not previously used for U.S. coinage at this scale.
Total authorized mintage across proof and uncirculated versions was capped at 50,000 combined. Sell-through was strong enough that the series is now regarded as one of the more successful modern commemorative programs by collector demand metrics, not marketing — the program actually sold out its gold allocation.
