The Marshall Islands began issuing collector coinage in 1986 following the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which granted the republic self-governance while retaining U.S. defense obligations — and, crucially, provided the economic framework that made a domestic commemorative program viable. This piece marks twenty years since Apollo 11's July 1969 landing, timed to the anniversary rather than any particular Marshallese connection to the event.
