Obverse description Green and pink bicolour note with THE CHARTERED BANK in bold letterpress across the upper centre, flanked by circular guilloche rosettes and corner numeral '5' medallions. The bank's royal arms vignette occupies the lower left, while the central field carries the promise-to-pay text, the denomination FIVE DOLLARS, and the issue date HONG KONG, 9TH APRIL, 1959. Two manuscript signatures of the Accountant and Manager appear above the lower serial number, with Chinese characters for the place and denomination rendered at the lateral margins.

Reverse description Printed entirely in green, the reverse carries an intaglio vignette of a traditional Chinese sailing junk on calm harbour waters with hills receding into the background. The denomination FIVE DOLLARS is inscribed in a scroll cartouche at the upper centre, with THE CHARTERED BANK along the lower border, while four corner medallions contain allegorical and faunal vignettes set within intricate guilloche frames, and the numeral '5' and Chinese character '伍' appear at the left and right margins respectively.
