The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in the late 1980s following the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which gave the republic its formal independence in 1986. With no meaningful domestic circulation economy, these pieces were produced entirely for the collector market — struck by foreign mints under contract and sold directly to hobbyists.
The 1931 Chevrolet Roadster was part of a sprawling series of American automobile commemoratives the RMI issued through the 1990s, a period when such topical collector coins flooded the market with diminishing returns.
