The Bank of Montreal, chartered in 1817, was Canada's first incorporated bank and long operated as something close to a de facto central bank before Confederation. Notes issued under the "18xx" dating convention were left partially blank at press, with the specific date completed by hand or rubber stamp at the point of issue — a common practice among Canadian chartered banks that complicates precise dating for collectors.

The Graphic Company of New York printed for several North American chartered banks during this period. Surviving examples from this series are scarce enough that census populations remain thin.
