The Merchants Bank of Halifax was a Nova Scotia institution with genuine commercial reach — by the 1890s it operated branches across the Maritime provinces and into central Canada. This note dates from the final years before the bank was absorbed by the Royal Bank of Canada in 1901, a merger that effectively ended Halifax's ambitions as an independent banking centre.
The American Bank Note Company contract for this series was typical of Canadian chartered bank practice in the period — domestic engraving capacity was limited, and ABNC's New York plant handled the bulk of high-security chartered bank work well into the twentieth century.
