Obverse description Printed in black on white cotton paper, the obverse carries a portrait vignette of Queen Victoria at lower left, engraved in fine intaglio with crown and formal dress, while a large central allegorical scene presents Britannia seated beside a reclining lion with a crowned shield and a female figure set against a landscape background. Large numerals "5" occupy the upper left and upper right corners, with the issuer title "The Province of Canada" and denomination "FIVE DOLLARS" inscribed below the central vignette. Authorization text reading "Authorized by 29 & 30 Vict. C.10" runs along the upper margin, with payability and signature lines completing the lower portion of the design.
