Reverse descriptionKrieghoff`s paintings frequently depict Amerindian women selling handicrafts. This one was painted after 1853, during the artist`s stay in Quebec City. It shows a Native woman wrapped in a Hudson`s Bay Company blanket, snowshoeing across the frozen river. Behind her back, a large basket hangs from a strap across her forehead. His merchandise (a handful of moccasins) hangs from a rope around his waist. Tangled blocks of ice dominate the landscape. Atop a cape in the background looms the citadel of Quebec. These are recurring elements in Krieghoff`s winter scenes from this period.
