| Obverse description | Within the nickel-plated brass centre, the coat of arms of the Galapagos Islands is depicted on a quartered shield, featuring island landscapes, a sailing vessel, volcanic formations, and marine elements, surmounted by a torch flanked by olive branches. The legend ISLAS GALAPAGOS arcs along the upper portion of the outer brass ring, while a ring of small five-pointed stars encircles the inner disc, and the date 2008 appears in the lower field of the ring. |

The Galápagos Islands have no independent monetary authority — they are a province of Ecuador, which abandoned the sucre for the U.S. dollar in 2000. These bimetallic pieces were issued as collector novelties, not circulating currency, and hold no legal tender status under Ecuadorian law. The X# prefix in Krause confirms this: non-circulating local issues, produced largely for the tourist trade.
