Mohammed VI had been on the throne less than three years when this issue appeared, having acceded following the sudden death of Hassan II in July 1999. The bimetallic format was introduced into Moroccan coinage during the 1980s, tracking similar moves across the franc zone and Mediterranean minting programs as countries sought harder-to-counterfeit low-denomination circulation pieces. Bank Al-Maghrib contracted the Paris Mint for much of its production during this period.
