Abd al-Aziz came to the throne in 1894 at roughly fourteen years old, with actual power held by the regent Ba Ahmad until 1900. The Paris Mint contract for these dirhams was part of a broader French commercial penetration of Moroccan monetary affairs — a process that would culminate in the 1906 Algeciras Conference, which effectively opened Morocco's finances to European supervision. Paris production is distinguished from the Fez Mint equivalent (Y#12.1) by subtleties in the die workmanship traceable to the Monnaie de Paris's tooling conventions.
