Thomas De La Rue's contract with the Banque Centrale de Tunisie for this series continued a relationship that dated back to Tunisia's first independent currency issues of the late 1950s. By 1983, De La Rue was printing for dozens of central banks simultaneously, but the Tunisian account was among the more stable long-term commissions on their books.
The watermark — a single security feature for a note of this denomination — reflects the relatively modest counterfeiting risk Tunisia faced domestically at the time, rather than any lapse in specification. Higher denominations in the same period carried more layered protection.
