Fabrika Vagona Kraljevo — the railcar manufacturing plant in Kraljevo — issued meal coupons like this one as an internal payment instrument for use in the factory canteen. The practice was common among large Yugoslav industrial enterprises during the socialist period and persisted into the early privatization years, when firms converted to shareholding structures (D.D., dioničko društvo) but continued to manage worker welfare directly. Wage arrears and hyperinflation in early 1990s Yugoslavia made canteen coupons a practical alternative to cash for daily subsistence.
