Obverse description This klippe (square) pattern piece features a circular coin design struck within a plain square planchet. The central design depicts the German Federal Eagle — a stylised heraldic eagle with spread wings, facing left, rendered in bold relief. The numeral '5' appears prominently in the lower centre of the coin circle, flanked by the date '1971' and the mint mark 'J' (Hamburg). The legend 'BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND' arcs around the upper periphery, with '5 DEUTSCHE MARK' along the lower periphery. The serial number '6035' is engraved in the lower right corner of the square field outside the coin circle.

Additional information

This piece is a pattern (Probe) for the commemorative issued to mark the 450th anniversary of Luther's excommunication — the papal bull Decet Romanum Pontificem having been signed in January 1521. The Cupal composition was tested against the standard silver alloy before the decision was made to proceed with .625 silver for the circulation issue. Patterns in this material were never released and exist in very small numbers, most traceable to official Bundesbank distribution channels rather than public sale.
