Obverse description The obverse features the Federal Eagle of Germany — the Bundesadler — rendered in high relief with wings spread and head turned to the right, its chest bearing fine scale-like feathering and its talons gripping crossed decorative elements. The eagle occupies the majority of the field in a bold, stylized design characteristic of post-war West German coinage. The circular legend reads BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND along the upper periphery, with 5 DEUTSCHE MARK at the lower periphery flanking the date 1984, and the mint mark D positioned to the left of the denomination numeral.
