Additional information

Kęstutis ruled the western Lithuanian domains as co-duke alongside his brother Algirdas in an arrangement that was genuinely unusual for the period — a functioning diarchy that held together for decades without the fratricidal collapse that plagued most medieval dynastic partnerships. These deniers were struck during a reign defined by near-constant military pressure from the Teutonic Knights, whose campaigns into Samogitia and Trakai made Kęstutis one of the most battle-tested rulers in 14th-century Europe, reportedly engaging the Order in over 100 armed encounters across his lifetime.

Lithuanian silver coinage from this period is poorly documented in survival terms. The Sylloge Nummorum reference remains one of the few systematic treatments of the series.
