Colombia's 1886 coinage falls at a precise moment of constitutional rupture: the federalist Estados Unidos de Colombia was formally dissolved that same year when Rafael Núñez pushed through the centralizing Constitution of 1886, replacing it with the República de Colombia. Coins struck under the old federal name during this transition year were produced knowing the issuing authority would cease to exist before the dies wore out.
The .500 fineness was a deliberate reduction from earlier Colombian silver standards, reflecting chronic fiscal pressure on the Bogotá mint throughout the 1880s.
