Proof strikings from the Casa da Moeda do Brasil in this period were produced in extremely limited numbers as pattern submissions for monetary committee approval, not for public sale. The 5 Cruzeiros denomination was introduced as part of Brazil's attempt to rationalize a coinage system being steadily eroded by inflation that would, within a few years, make the entire Cruzeiro series obsolete. Most "Prova" pieces of this type were retained in institutional collections or distributed to a small number of authorized recipients.
