Obverse description Right-facing truncated effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, rendered in fine relief. The legend ELIZABETH II ISLE OF MAN encircles the portrait, with the date 2010 and the engraver's initials IRB also appearing in the legend. The portrait is executed in the Ian Rank-Broadley style, characteristic of late-reign Pobjoy Mint issues for the Isle of Man.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a richly detailed scene commemorating the 325th anniversary of the birth of Georg Friedrich Händel, evoking the famous Water Music and Royal Fireworks performances. A ceremonial state barge is shown navigating a river, with musicians visible aboard, while elaborate fountains, fireworks, and architectural structures including arched pavilions and obelisks fill the background; smaller vessels flank the barge on either side. The Pobjoy Mint privy mark appears to the right of the central design. The encircling legend reads 325TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF GEORG FRIEDRICH HÄNDEL, and the dates 1685 and 1759 flanking the denomination 5 CROWNS appear in the exergue.

Additional information

Pobjoy struck this piece for the 325th anniversary of Handel's birth, issued under the authority of the Isle of Man. Handel spent the majority of his adult life in London after arriving from Germany in 1710, eventually becoming a British subject in 1727 — the same year George II was crowned, a monarch whose coronation anthems Handel himself composed. The piece is unusual within Pobjoy's commemorative output for its 5 oz fine silver specification, a format the mint reserved for a small number of prestige issues during this period.
