Reverse description The reverse presents a right-facing draped bust portrait of Juan Vázquez de Coronado, the Spanish conquistador and first governor of Costa Rica, occupying the upper central field. The sitter is depicted wearing a ruffled collar characteristic of the 16th-century period. The name JUAN VAZQUEZ DE CORONADO is inscribed to the left of the bust, with the commemorative dates 1564 and 1964 positioned to the right. The circular legend IV CENTENARIO FUNDACION DE CARTAGO MUY NOBLE Y LEAL arcs around the upper portion of the field. The denomination 5 COLONES is prominently displayed in two lines in the lower field, all within a beaded border.
