Obverse description The Costa Rican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting three snow-capped volcanoes rising above a valley, flanked by two sailing ships on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, with a rising sun in the upper left and a sky with seven stars representing the seven provinces. The arms are encircled by a wreath of coffee branches on the left and banana fronds on the right. The circumferential legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA / AMERICA CENTRAL runs around the upper portion, while the initials B.C.C.R. (Banco Central de Costa Rica) and the denomination CINCO COLONES appear in the lower field.
