The Szechuan-Shensi Soviet was established in late 1932 after the Fourth Red Army under Zhang Guotao and Xu Xiangqian broke through Nationalist lines into the Tongjiang region. Currency issued by its Worker's and Farmer's Bank was a practical military-political necessity — Nationalist blockades had stripped the base area of conventional monetary supplies, and local exchange needed a functioning medium. Cloth was used as substrate when paper was unavailable or impractical to source in sufficient quantity within the isolated soviet zone.
The "Fantasy" designation in modern catalogs reflects unresolved authenticity questions. No conclusively genuine example has been verified against contemporary documentation, and the category exists to flag that status rather than resolve it.
