Obverse description Printed in purple-brown ink on plain paper. The left third carries a vignette of a figure beneath a palm tree, while the centre displays a large circular state arms vignette flanked by two standing figures, with a ribbon inscribed VIRTUE LIBERTY INDEPENDENCE and state name abbreviations on a surrounding band. To the right, a scalloped guilloche cartouche encloses the large numeral 5. Below the central vignette, the issuer name SUTTON & STEWART and the promise PAY TO BEARER appear in bold letterpress, followed by FIVE CENTS in large display type, the manuscript serial number, redemption condition, place and date of issue in manuscript, and two manuscript signatures, with the printer imprint at the foot.
