Reverse description The large numeral 5 appears prominently in the center of the field, surrounded by a ring of thirteen six-pointed stars representing the original colonies, with no rays between the stars — the defining characteristic distinguishing KM#97 from the earlier rays variety KM#96. The arc legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination CENTS is inscribed along the lower margin with a central dot on either side. The overall design is clean and symmetrical, engraved by James B. Longacre.
