Additional information

Swaziland's second portrait coinage for Mswati III followed his consolidation of absolute power after banning political parties outright in 1992 and dissolving the constitutional review process. The Central Bank updated the effigy accordingly — royal portrait coinage in Swaziland has tracked the king's political entrenchment as much as any aesthetic preference for currency modernization.
