Reverse description The reverse displays a naturalistic depiction of a gecko (lizard) in low relief, rendered in fine detail with its head turned to the left and all four splayed feet with spread toes clearly visible, occupying the lower and central portion of the field. Above the lizard, the denomination numeral 5 is prominently struck in large bold figures at centre, with the legend CENTS inscribed in a straight line above it near the upper rim. The field is otherwise plain, allowing the zoological subject to serve as the principal decorative motif in the characteristic style of the Kiribati independence coinage series.
