Reverse description The central field features a large bold numeral 5 set within an oval cartouche or shield form, surmounted by the Hawaiian royal crown rendered in fine detail at the top of the design. Below the numeral, an ornamental ribbon or scroll device bearing the denomination inscription CENTS completes the central motif. The circular legend AU MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO — the Hawaiian national motto meaning 'The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness' — arcs around the periphery. A beaded inner border frames the entire design, consistent with the obverse treatment.
