| Obverse description | Large forward-facing bust of President Thomas Jefferson rendered in bold high relief, facing left, occupying the majority of the obverse field. The portrait, designed by Joe Fitzgerald and engraved by Don Everhart, is based on the Houdon life mask and presents Jefferson in a neoclassical style with period dress visible at the truncation. The legend IN GOD WE TRUST curves along the upper right periphery, while the inscription LIBERTY appears in Jefferson's own facsimile signature to the right of the portrait. The mint mark is positioned below the signature, and the date 2005 is placed along the lower right rim. |

| Reverse description | A powerfully rendered American bison (Bison bison) stands in profile facing right, depicted in a naturalistic posture with its massive shaggy head lowered toward the ground line, evoking the iconic image of the great plains. The design, modeled by Norman E. Nemeth and engraved by Jamie Franki, captures fine textural detail in the animal's heavy coat and musculature. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper periphery, while FIVE CENTS is inscribed along the lower border. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears in three stacked lines in the lower central field, below the bison's head. The engraver's initials NEN appear at lower right near the ground line. |
