Prison scrip issued by the Missouri Department of Corrections in Jefferson City served as a controlled internal currency, restricting inmate purchasing power to the facility canteen and preventing contraband cash from circulating inside the walls. The practice of issuing institutional scrip was widespread across American state penitentiaries through much of the twentieth century before electronic account systems rendered it obsolete.
Paper composition made these notes inherently fragile in a high-wear environment. Survivors are almost invariably damaged.
