Reverse description A naturalistic rendering of the Blue Crane (Anthropoides paradiseus), South Africa's national bird, is depicted in right profile, standing on a rocky outcrop with sparse vegetation in the lower field. The denomination numeral 5 and the cent symbol c appear prominently to the left of the bird in large raised characters. The engraver's initials GJR are incused at the lower left of the field near the base of the design.
