Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran from the late 1960s through the 1970s and prompted dozens of developing nations to produce specially designated coinage tied to agricultural development themes. Seychelles joined the FAO program shortly after gaining independence from Britain in June 1976, making this 1977 issue one of the earliest coins struck under the newly sovereign government.
