After Japan's surrender in August 1945, the U.S. Navy moved quickly into Tsingtao (Qingdao) to accept the Japanese capitulation in northern China and support the Nationalist government's reoccupation. The base became a major American naval presence, and the Enlisted Men's Club — like similar facilities across the Pacific — issued its own scrip to keep dollars off the local economy and out of the black market. These chits circulated only within the club's premises.
The occupation ended abruptly in 1949 as Communist forces advanced. Scrip of this type was rarely preserved; most was discarded or destroyed when personnel rotated out.
