| Reverse description | A central depiction of the South Point Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in Barbados, shown in three-quarter perspective with radiating light beams extending into the field and palm trees and coastal scenery in the background. The denomination FIVE CENTS arcs boldly along the lower portion of the design in large raised letters. The engraver's initials PN appear discreetly in the lower field. A beaded border frames the entire composition. |

| Additional information |
Barbados gained independence from Britain in November 1966, but the new nation continued using the Eastern Caribbean dollar — shared with several British territories — for nearly a decade before establishing its own currency. The Central Bank of Barbados was founded in 1972, and the first national coinage series followed in 1973, with this 1976 date representing a continuation of that inaugural design run rather than a new issue.
