The FAO designation places this coin within a United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization promotional program that ran across dozens of issuing nations from the early 1970s onward. Fiji participated selectively, and FAO-marked issues from smaller Pacific states were often struck in limited quantities for distribution through FAO channels rather than general circulation — meaning survival rates in circulated grades can be unexpectedly low. The shift to nickel-plated steel from the earlier cupro-nickel composition happened in 1990, partly in response to rising base metal costs across the Pacific island minting agreements managed through the Royal Australian Mint.
