| Reverse description | A bold, close-up rendition of the Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) fills the reverse field, depicted from above with the animal's distinctive spines radiating prominently around the upper portion of the design. The creature's forelegs and claws are rendered in fine detail on either side of the central motif, and the numeral 5 occupies the lower centre of the field, flanked by the echidna's body. The designer's initials SD appear incuse at the base of the design near the lower rim. The composition is a faithful, enlarged adaptation of Stuart Devlin's original reverse design first introduced on the Australian five-cent coin in 1966. |
