The 4th portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, was introduced across Commonwealth coinage in 1998 following the Royal Mint's decision to update the effigy on a roughly decade-long rotation. Australia adopted it that same year. Gold proof versions of circulating denominations like this one were issued annually by the RAM primarily as set components — individually they see little independent collector demand, but their absence from a year set is immediately noticed.
The echidna design by Stuart Devlin has appeared on the five-cent piece since decimal introduction in 1966, making it one of the longest-uninterrupted coin designs in Australian monetary history.
